FILM NOIR

The Film Noir was developed during and after World War II. It is also called the “Black Film”, a Hollywood crime dramas that shows the dark side of human nature.

Film Noir films are mostly shot in gloomy grays, blacks, and whites. It is often a story about manipulative people, scenes become more unendurable and hidden agendas were at every corner. They also emphasize a brutal, shadowy, dark and sadistic side of human. An oppressive atmosphere is also one of its stylized characteristic.

Fatalism also played an important role in Film Noir. Females were extremely hot and sexual and they are the ones controlling the composition. Protagonists or the antagonists seemed to be led to their destruction and most of these incidents were planned by the Femme Fetale..

The setting and lighting used in Film Noir rooted in German Expressionist cinematography were expressionistic lighting, gloomy shadows and slant camera angles. Settings were gloomy appearances, dark passageways, and low key lighting. The locations of the stories were often in dark streets, apartments, or abandoned places or warehouses.
